Do-it -yourselfer here in need of some help please! I have a small building
siding job, about 1000 square foot of siding. A local siding dealer sells Alcoa
products. So I went to AlcoaHomes web site to the pro tools / product info/
vinyl siding and assessories/ universal siding accessories, and they list J
channel in the color I want (american walnut) available in two sizes, 5/8" and
7/8". These are the entry dimension part of the J channel. I don't get it? The
vinyl siding is 3/4". Why doesn't the J channel come 3/4 inch, and when do you
use the 5/8 J. If I use the 7/8 J channel, won't that be too sloopy? I don't
understand.
Also, is finish trim, utility trim, under sill trim, all the same? I read about
the snap lock punch tool and all. So when I come to the last row of siding
where it meets with the sofit, do I need to place the horizontal cut edge into
the utility trim and also in J channel or just end it with the utility trim? It
is going to butt up to exsisting aluminum sofit.
One more question: utility trim is used only under a window inside J channel,
or ALSO on top of the window in the J channel as well? In other words, do I use
utility trim at the rip cuts of siding over the windows J channel or just slip
it in the J channel by itself? Seems to me if I don't use the utility trim on
top of the window as well, It will just fall flat against the back side of the
J channel making it look funny.
