We are building a deck around a fireplace vent on the rear of our home. Not
sure if we are going to use wood or synthetic materials yet. How far away
from the fireplace vent must I stay to be safe? We would like to build the
deck just below the vent. I am thinking that should be safe as the heat
rises. Are there any rules of thumbs here?

Hello,
Vent?
Ihave a little thing down at the ground for - well - i thought it was for
cleaning out ashes . . . you mean to tell me that thing is a "vent"!!!!????
Like i mean with the entire fireplace being one big open thing, with a chimney
nearly two stories high - it needs a "vent"???!!! Just how important can
be this "vent" thingy . . . If it were up to me i would just stuff a cork
in it and forget it.

Can you provide more details about this 'vent'? It sounds like an ash
cleanout, or crawlspace vent to me. Thanks.

I suspect he's talking about the vent on a direct-vented gas fireplace. You
don't need a chimney for these units - they just vent out the sidewall of
the building.

Hello,
If you can run your gas stove and gas oven without "venting", why do you
need "venting" for a gas hotwater heater or fire place?
