Discussion:
concrete anchors for railing

Hi:

I am in the process of installing vinyl covered aluminum railing on my
concret patio. I need to dill 4 holes per post and use some sort of (at
least) 3/8' type anchor at 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 length.

My question is what is the best type: wedge, sleeve, or tapcon. I came
across some large (3/8") tapcon bolts at a busy beaver near my home. I
have used the tapcon screws to install cabineys in my garage and they
seem to hold a lot of weight and they can be removed leaving only a
hole to fill if one makes a mistake (which I often do). Are the bolts
sufficient for my use or one of the other typs?

thx

True Tapcons only come in 1/4" max diameter. I assume you were looking at
a Powers Wedge-Bolt or Simpson Titen HD.

Neither of these is approved for outdoor use. I suggest the use of
stainless steel wedge anchors or something similar.

Have to agree w/Bob on this...."I suggest the use of
stainless steel wedge anchors or something similar." I just happen to be a
fan of Hilti anchors. Used universally in my trade and they provide
guarantees as long as install is per mfg. recommendations. But I love Hilti
epoxy even better.....way easier amount of work and less time. Cost is
higher but WTH?

Nehmo,
Ironworker. Wedge type &/or Epoxy. Wedge up to 3/4" but mostly 1/2" & under.
Epoxy otherwise, no glass vial types, just the 2 part that mixes thru the
nozzle. Last test was about 6 years ago, vertical pull, 3/4", epoxy based,
8" embedment and tested to 5,000lbs. tension

Dan is correct when he says that the epoxy resins available today are
pretty easy to use. So that certainly is an alternative to the wedge
anchors I suggested earlier.

I would suggest SIKA AnchorFix products (they have a fast ~3 minutes &
a slow ~ 1 hr)

available at the Home Depots in SoCal

works in a standard caulking gun

good stuff

cheers

3M has some concrete anchor materials. Mixes in nozzle then spray your bolt
with release spray, thread bolt in, makes threads, unscrew bolt, let harden,
set railings and screw bolts in, done.
