What are your preferences, using a 2x2 strip at the bottom of the ledger board
to help attach the joist or using a metal joist hanger. I tend to lean toward using
the 2x2 strip and toenailing but the joist hangers sure seem prevelant out there.
Opinions appreciated.

The joist hangers are preferred because they are a more consistent connection.
In other words, the strength of the connection is more predicatble. It's
possible to do a good job toe-nailing, but it's also possible to have a
connection that seems OK but has very little holding power.

A 2x2 under the joist isn't going to offer much strength either, considering
the loads a deck often has to carry.

I vote for the joist hangers, or possibly a treated 2x4 ledger (substantially
nailed) that carries skillfully toe-nailed joists.

Be sure to use good quality galvanized nails. Double hot-dipped are best.

We use joist hangers.

Best of luck, and let us know how it comes out!

You should not rely on the toe-nails since they are prone to pull-out.

If you are being inspected for code you may have to use the hangers.
Remember that you need to align the *top of the joists, so that 2x2
might do you more harm than good under the joists. (The joists are not
the same size)
